Q&A: What do I need to commit to do to get the most from Six Weeks of Windows Azure?

The most common question we get asked is some variation on “How much effort/resource do we need to commit?”.

The FAQ covers some of this (and is definitely worth a read) but hopefully the following will help.

Short answer:

Whatever your company can spare. It is designed to be flexible. We will be supporting the spectrum of one individual doing a few hours a week through to an entire team focused 100% on Windows Azure during the six weeks with the view to bringing a new solution to market.

The themes of Six Weeks of Windows Azure (Design | Build | Test | Market | Sell ) correspond to the “journey” many solutions go through – however in most cases this “journey” takes a lot longer than six weeks! What we are attempting to do is compress the information, best practices and guidance into six weeks – but leave it up to you to focus and progress in a way which makes most sense for your business.

Long answer:

The “minimum”

The majority of the webinars will be:

  • recorded and available to watch on demand at a later date
  • self contained

Which means your company could still get value from taking part in Six Weeks of Windows Azure even if you attended only two or three sessions but were now aware of an archive of further sessions for you to dig into when the timing is right for your company. A suggested norm would be:

  • One individual takes the time to understand the agenda in detail and stay a breadth of additions and opportunities as they appear during the six weeks
  • That individual attends or highlights to colleagues webinars as appropriate

The “norm”

We expect most companies to attend most webinars – but you certainly don’t need to attend all. You should attempt to keep clear the webinar/surgery times each Monday and Wednesday plus some further time to work through the ideas and knowledge we share and apply them to your own situation. A suggested norm would be:

  • One developer with Monday and Wednesday clear each week to attend the webinars and apply the information to your solution
    • With additional developers attending webinars primarily as a training activity
  • One commercial decision maker attending the Wednesday commercial webinar
    • With additional commercial folks selectively attending webinars

The “ideal”

In an ideal world a company would ring fence resource (mainly people!) for the full six weeks. Our webinars and surgeries take place every Monday and Wednesday but we would love to see you designing, coding, testing around these – with a view to significantly advancing your understanding and adoption of Windows Azure in your solutions whilst also better aligning your business to compete effectively. Perhaps even to the point of having a new solution advertised in the Windows Azure marketplace by the end of the six weeks. A suggested ideal would be:

  • Two developers full time for the six weeks working on extending or migrating your solution to Windows Azure. Every Monday and Wednesday they join us online for webinars and surgeries.
    • With additional developers attending webinars primarily as a training activity
  • One commercial decision maker looking at the impact of moving to SaaS/Cloud in terms of business transformation – likely one or two days per week. Every Monday and Wednesday they join us online for an hour or two.
    • With additional commercial folks selectively attending webinars
